Choosing the right refurbished MacBook

Every MacBook shares the same strengths — excellent build quality, a class-leading trackpad and macOS — but the right model depends on how you'll use it and how long you want to keep it.

Step 1: Pick your chip

Apple silicon MacBooks (M1, M2, M3 and later) are the strongest choice for most buyers. They offer much better battery life and efficiency than the Intel models they replaced, and they typically stay on the macOS update list longer. Intel MacBooks remain a sensible budget option for lighter work, or if you need to run Windows natively with Boot Camp.

Step 2: Air or Pro?

WeightLighterSlightly heavier

Step 3: Choose memory and storage carefully

Unlike many Windows business laptops, MacBook RAM and storage cannot be upgraded after purchase. Buy the configuration you'll need for the next few years: 8GB RAM is fine for everyday use; 16GB suits creative and development work. For storage, 256GB is enough if you use cloud storage; choose 512GB or more for large photo, video or music libraries.

Step 4: Check the battery and grade

Every listing shows the measured battery health, and cycle count is checked against Apple's published rating for the model. Cosmetic condition is described by our condition grades — a Grade B MacBook works exactly like a Grade A+ one.

Our MacBook checks

Each MacBook is confirmed free of Activation Lock, securely erased, reinstalled with a clean copy of macOS and tested through our nine-step process. Browse all Apple laptops or learn how to check battery health yourself.
